The term al-mīrah (الميرة) in Arabic denotes “provisions” or “sustenance,” that is, the foodstuff and essential supplies which a person stores within the household, as well as the provisions of a traveller for a journey. This usage is attested in the Qur’anic discourse, as in Surat Yusuf (12: 65): “wa namīru ahlanā” (وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا), signifying: “we shall supply our family with provisions,” that is, we shall bring them food and necessary sustenance.
